How do I know if a quad bike is road legal?

Road legal quad bikes are S.V.A'D or type approved

When buying a new or used quad here are a couple of pointers for you to make sure it's road legal:

1. Check the V55-1 for a type approval number (The selling dealer will have this document for new quads)
2. If the quad bike has not been approved ask to see the S.V.A certificate. If the quad is second hand you can check the V5-C reg document, section K, for a type approval number or the S.V.A number. If this section is blank we would suggest you do some more home work to find out the history of the quad bike. (I.E. That it's not an aggricutural quad changed to PLG without an S.V.A). You can call V.O.S.A and they should be able to check the chassis number for you. If the quad has been S.V.A'd they'll know

All our quads are either type approved or we S.V.A test them. The V5-C docs we have for our quads have a type approval number in section K.

Some early V5-C reg docs did not have the type approval printed in section K, so we would strongly recommend you check it out. There was a lot of people doing the S.V.A dodge with aggricultural reg a few years ago, and some people still are...

What licence do I need to ride a quad or can am spyder on the road?

A full car licence is required

What engine size can I ride?

You can ride any cc with a car licence but 18 to 21 year old will only get insurance up to a 350cc

Do I need insurance?

Yes you need insurance to ride on any highway

Do I need a licence & insurance to ride green lanes?

Yes a green lane is a public road / highway and you must have a full car licence & insurance

Do I need a licence or insurance to ride on private land?

No you do not need a licence or insurance but you do need to get land owners permission

Can I ride an agricultural taxed vehicle for leisure use i.e. Green laning?

No it is illegal to use an agri registered vehicle for leisure use
